For stewardship pharmacists and micro lab leads
Interactive antibiogram software that turns the yearly PDF into an online antibiogram dashboard filtered by unit, source and period
The annual antibiogram answers one question per year, and the next question waits for the next build. An interactive antibiogram answers it on the screen while the committee is still in the room.
Try the builder on the sample data, or drop in your own CSV. It is parsed in your browser and never uploaded.
Short answer
An interactive antibiogram is a cumulative antibiogram you can filter on screen, by specimen source, hospital unit and time period, instead of a fixed PDF table. Antimicrobe builds it from the susceptibility CSV your lab already exports, applies CLSI M39 rules to every view (first isolate per patient, no percentage on fewer than 30 isolates) and recalculates each cut in seconds. The Lab plan at $249 a month filters by source and period; unit cuts and quarterly trends are on Stewardship at $749.
Why the PDF antibiogram stops getting used
Many US hospitals still publish the antibiogram once a year as a PDF or a laminated card. By the time it reaches prescribers the data is between six and eighteen months old, it covers the whole house, and it cannot answer the questions people actually bring to it, such as how E. coli does in urine from the emergency department, or whether Pseudomonas in the ICU looks different from the floors.
Access is the other problem. Tallman and colleagues (Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, 2018) surveyed medical residents and found that about 90% knew their institution had an antibiogram, but only 44% knew how to get to it at the moment they were prescribing. A table that sits three clicks deep on the intranet does not shape empiric choices.
Penn Medicine described the same pattern from the lab side. Its antibiogram project page says that in 2014 a single antibiogram report took several months to produce, and that data delivered every nine to twelve months was often obsolete as soon as it was published. That is the gap interactive antibiogram software closes: the build takes seconds, so the team can ask the second and third question instead of waiting a year.
What the interactive antibiogram does in Antimicrobe
You upload the line list your lab already pulls for the annual report: a patient key, collection date, specimen source, unit, organism, antibiotic and the S, I or R the lab reported, or the MIC. Antimicrobe maps your column names once and remembers the mapping, so next quarter's file loads without the conversation.
Every view after that is a filter, not a new project. Pick urine only, the last twelve months, or the ICU, and the table rebuilds with de-duplication and suppression recalculated for that cut rather than inherited from the whole year. Cells under 30 isolates stay visible as a marked tile instead of disappearing, so nobody mistakes a gap for good news.
The counting rules are the ones described on CLSI M39 antibiogram software, and the columns most LIS exports carry are listed on laboratory information system integration. If all you need is the yearly table produced faster, the antibiogram generator page covers that narrower job.

- MDRO counts and empiric rankings by local percent susceptible
- CSV of any view and a clean print page, both stamped with the rules used and the generation date
Interactive antibiogram options compared
Hospitals that wanted an online antibiogram have taken five routes. The table is built from each option's own published material. The main difference is not the screen, it is who produces the numbers and how often.
The in-house Power BI route is real and some hospitals do it well, but it lives or dies with the analyst who wrote it. Dauphin and colleagues (ASHE 2023) reported that validating their Power BI antibiogram against the lab middleware turned up discrepancies caused by cascade reporting, which is the kind of rule a vendor tool has to handle for everyone. The enterprise surveillance platforms that bundle antibiogram views are compared on antimicrobial stewardship software for community hospitals.
| Route | Who produces the numbers | Filters on screen | Refresh | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PDF or Excel table | Lab or pharmacy, by hand | None | Yearly | Staff time |
| EHR embedded e-antibiogram (CHOP style) | Informatics team with visual analytics software | Source, unit, infection type | Monthly rolling 12 months at CHOP | Internal build |
| Power BI or Qlik dashboard | Hospital analyst on SQL feeds | Whatever the analyst builds | As often as the feed runs | Analyst time plus BI licenses |
| Academic build (Penn ILUM) | The health system's own team | Facility, region, demographics | Near real time | Not sold publicly |
| Point of care app (Firstline, Sanford Guide) | Your team uploads the antibiogram | Organism and drug lookup | When you upload new data | Not published |
| Antimicrobe | Built from your LIS export under CLSI M39 rules | Source, period, unit, syndrome | Every upload, monthly or quarterly | $249 Lab, $749 Stewardship |
Getting the online antibiogram in front of prescribers
An interactive antibiogram is a working tool for the people who own the data: the stewardship pharmacist, the microbiology lead, the infectious diseases physician and the infection preventionist. Seats are named (2 on Lab, 8 on Stewardship, 25 on Network), and the workspace is where the team decides which cuts belong in the published version.
Prescribers usually need something simpler, and the right answer depends on where they already look. Many hospitals print the agreed views as a pocket card and an intranet page. Others load the same numbers into the point of care app their residents already use, such as Sanford Guide Stewardship Assist or Firstline, both of which display an antibiogram your team supplies rather than calculating one. The print page and CSV from Antimicrobe are designed for exactly that hand-off.
The apps themselves, what they show and what they cost, are compared in antibiogram app for hospitals. Teams writing order sets from the tables can go on to empiric antibiotic therapy by your antibiogram.
Who buys interactive antibiogram software
Hospitals that also want ward-level work for critical care can see ICU antibiogram software, and those grouping isolates by infection type syndromic antibiogram software.
- Stewardship pharmacists who get asked for "the ICU numbers" or "urine only" every month and rebuild the spreadsheet each time
- Microbiology lab managers who own the annual report and want it produced in minutes instead of weeks
- Infectious diseases physicians presenting local resistance to the pharmacy and therapeutics committee
- Health systems that tried a Power BI antibiogram and lost the analyst who maintained it
- Community hospitals that want an online antibiogram without an EHR build request in a twelve month queue
How much does interactive antibiogram software cost?
Antimicrobe publishes its prices. The Lab plan is $249 a month for one facility, 25,000 isolates a year and two seats, with filters by source and period, CSV and print exports, and it is bought by card on the site. Stewardship is $749 a month for up to three facilities, 150,000 isolates and eight seats, and adds unit and syndrome cuts, quarterly trends and MDRO threshold alerts. Annual billing is half the monthly price.
The alternatives are priced differently. An in-house dashboard costs analyst hours plus BI licenses and maintenance every time the LIS export changes. Enterprise surveillance platforms and point of care apps do not publish prices and are quoted after a demo.

What this does not do
- It does not connect to the LIS or EHR over HL7. It reads files you export, as often as you export them
- It does not fire real-time alerts to prescribers or submit to NHSN
- It is not a public prescriber app. The interactive views are for named seats, and the published version goes out as print, CSV or into the app you already use
- It does not choose therapy for a patient or replace your institutional guideline

Questions
On this page's topic
What is an interactive antibiogram?
An interactive antibiogram is a cumulative antibiogram you can filter on screen by specimen source, hospital unit and time period instead of reading one fixed table. Each filtered view still follows CLSI M39 counting rules, so the stewardship team can answer a follow-up question the same day rather than at the next annual build.
Can you build an antibiogram dashboard in Power BI?
Yes, and several hospitals have published Power BI antibiograms built on SQL feeds from the lab. The work is in the rules: first isolate per patient, suppression under 30 isolates and cascade reporting. It needs an analyst to build it and to maintain it each time the LIS export changes, which is the cost a ready-made tool removes.
How often should an online antibiogram be updated?
CLSI M39 describes the cumulative antibiogram as an annual report, and that stays the reference version. An online antibiogram can refresh monthly or quarterly so the team sees trends early, as long as small cuts keep the 30 isolate rule and pooled periods are labeled. Antimicrobe recalculates every view on each upload.
Does an interactive antibiogram need patient names?
No. De-duplication only needs to know that two rows belong to the same patient, not who the patient is. Antimicrobe works with a pseudonymous patient key such as a hash your lab generates, and a business associate agreement is available on the Enterprise plan.
Can prescribers see the antibiogram on their phones?
Yes, through the channel they already use. Antimicrobe produces a clean print page and a CSV of any view, which teams publish on the intranet, print as a pocket card or load into a point of care app such as Sanford Guide Stewardship Assist or Firstline. The interactive workspace itself is for named seats.
Which plan includes unit filters?
Unit and syndrome cuts are on the Stewardship plan at $749 a month for up to three facilities, together with quarterly trends and MDRO alerts. The Lab plan at $249 a month filters by specimen source and period. Network at $2,400 adds cross-facility comparison for up to twelve facilities.
